Select your youth team from potential and not just winning

In the past two years, I have thought a lot about, how to select players for my squad. I have always had a clear distinction about, what I weight the most in youth players.

It is not sure, that my view will suit all youth coaches out there, because we coach different ages, have a different mentality or have a different view on coaching.

When I have to decide, which youth players to select for my U14 team, I look for the players, who I think have the biggest potential and not only the ones, who is physically ahead now and thereby can give us an advantage in our matches.

Maybe a player isn’t performing right now and some people/parents don’t understand, why I have selected him. Maybe they can see his potential better than me? But when I think, that a player will develop in the future, he will be on my team.

So my appeal to the youth coaches out there is, select the players, who you think will develop the most and not the ones, who only can win matches for you right now. You have to think and plan long-termed youth development.
