I’m back home again from my first JAOO conference, which took place here in Denmark (in Aarhus).

During the last 5 days I’ve been listening to many different speakers split over about 20 tracks and 2 tutorials. My favorite speakers were Kevlin Henney, Rod Johnson, Alistair Cockburn and Dave Thomas.

I arrived on Monday morning where I attended “The Amazon.com Technology platform: building blocks for innovation” by Werner Vogels. During the rest of the day, I attended the following tracks:

  • “AJAX – the white tornado?” by Anton Frico,
  • “Mashups – meet enterprises” by Rodney A. Smith,
  • “Scripting JSF” by Ed Burns,
  • “Why the middle tier is making the database run slow” by Anjo Kolk,
  • “Conversations between lousely coupled services” by Gregor Hohpe

At last Alistair Cockburn gave the party keynote called “Methodologists are blue-green algae and methodologies are swimsuits” – he was GREAT!. I did not join the JAOO party that night.

Tuesday I first attended the keynote “The soul of a new programming language” where Guy L. Steele talked about Sun’s new programming language called Fortress (proberly released in 2008). During the rest of the day I attended the following tracks:

  • “Introduction: Java rich client development” by Kai Tödter,
  • “Making Java persistens perform” by Charles Jarvis and Patrick Linskey,
  • “First aid for Swing” by Karsten Lentzsch,
  • “Enterprise grade AJAX with JSF” by Ed Burns,
  • “Google web toolkit” by Bruce Johnson
  • “If I was going to Glasgow, I wouldn’t start from here” by Alistair Cockburn

Wednesday was the last day with tracks. Here I first attended “Hot old ideas – experiences of an old country programmer” by Dave Thomas, which was a quite good track. During the rest of the day I also attended:

  • “The beauty of Ruby” by Glenn Vanderburg,
  • “Are we there yet?” by Rod Johnson,
  • “Five considerations for software architecture” by Kevlin Henney

JAOO ended the day with an expert panel about the topic “How will we be programming in 2016?”. The following experts participated Dave Thomas, Guy L. Steele, Ole L. Madsen, Steve Vinoski, Erik Meijer and Kevlin Henney.

Thursday I attended the tutorial “Hands-on agile development” by Kevlin Henney, a superb tutorial.

Friday the last day of the JAOO conference this year, I attended the tutorial “Patterns and practices of building sustainable ” by Frank Buschmann.

I’m really looking forward to be back again next year, where it will take place between the 23th – 28th september.
